Completed projects in 2013 2014 Project List 2013/14
The Australian Wooden Boat Festival came around again and for 2013 I had my own stand......four days of speaking to many, many people from all walks of life - all attracted by "something a little different"... Thanks to a few mates that helped out, Scott from Brisbane for the coffee and calamari, Mark from Cairns for looking after Scott and Greg, Tim, Peter S and all for turning up and mucking in.....
Smile30 - Colin Harris met me for a coffee after the Australian Wooden Boat Festival was over to discuss his plans to paddle on the Derwent River at New Norfolk. A PBK57 decked canoe was the result, being built by Colin and myself. Additions to Percy Blandford's design - foot braces, mast step for an existing sail rig shared with another of Colin's craft and a general outfitting for fishing. Western Red Cedar and Huon Pine with Blackwood floorboards and an "art deco" touch to the bow and stern..........
In June I had the chance to revisit my second boatbuilding project. A Sassafras14 now owned by Dr Tom Wright in Cairns had a small mishap and the gunwale needed some tender loving care. I was very interested to look back on some of my work from over ten years ago - and happy with my introspections..... Gunwale repaired, I took the opportunity to give her a minor facelift. She looks good...... p.s. Thanks to my brother-in-law for the use of his new shed - see that cupboard, soft close BLUM hinges there....thumbs up!!!! :)
In March almost exactly a year to the day, Colin brought his PBK57 frame back to be skinned.......lots of fun and another "modern" PBK is born....
This beauty passed through my hands.....some 40, 50, 60 years old I can't (or haven't yet) found out any details. At first glance it might have been built locally with King Billy and Tas Oak or Swamp Gum....but the rib material isn't quite falling into those species....and then there is the construction itself - someone knew what they were doing. I'm settling on the idea that it was brought out from Nth Amarica/Canada after the war in the Fifties.....quite a piece..
